Door Won’t Latch? Check Alignment Before Replacing the Lock

Does a latch or deadbolt move freely while the door is open, yet bind after it closes? The bolt may be catching on the strike opening. Schlage lists strike alignment, sagging hinges and weatherstripping among possible causes. Kwikset uses an open-versus-closed test for certain smart-lock models; follow your own lock’s manual.
Check without forcing it
- 1. With the door open, operate the latch or bolt gently. If it already sticks, stop and check the lock’s installation guide.
- 2. Close the door normally—don’t push or lift it—and test again. Resistance only when closed suggests the door and strike may be out of line.
- 3. Look for obvious rub marks at the strike, loose or worn hinges, a door that sags or needs lifting, or weatherstripping that presses hard against the frame.
Before adjusting
These are clues, not proof. Avoid filing or enlarging the frame opening without checking the lock instructions and door construction. If the door will not latch securely, or still binds, have a locksmith or installer inspect it. For hardware guidance, contact Jinnah.
